A Face Only A Mother (And Millions Of Fans) Could Love
I didn’t find a rotating restaurant in Cincinnati (not that I looked very hard), however 2 of my recent wishes came true, and some others I didn’t know I had at our next stop, Chicago.
1) I found a place that made fruit smoothies. I got hooked on Booster Juices when we were rehearsing in Vancouver and had been craving one recently with no satisfaction until then.
2) I did manage to rise to great heights by going to the top of the John Hancock Observatory before soundcheck. It was a gorgeous day, which made for a spectacular view by which to finish my smoothie.
Even my own mother said she thinks Sarah and I look alike. Given that fact, I always try to offset Sarah in a complimentary way with my onstage attire. The previous few show nights we had managed that effect without consulting one another but in Chicago we were a little too much in sync! A few minutes before the show, Sarah and I stepped out of our dressing rooms into the hallway at the same time, took one look at each other and started laughing. We were dressed in very nearly identical outfits: black top, blue jeans and black boots. We had both even put our hair up the same way, which both of us rarely do for shows. Our lovely on-tour yoga instructor Sharon Tron was there and snapped a photo of us pointing at each other. Needless to say I went back in the dressing room to quickly change my top and take my hair down.
After that show we had a backstage surprise: Butterfly’s guitarist Sean Kelly also plays in a Neil Diamond tribute band. The man who plays “Neil” was there to serenade us for a private concert of Neil Diamond requests. He looked and sounded very much like the real thing. They played whatever was called out: Solitary Man, Sweet Caroline, America, I Am I Said, Forever In Blue Jeans, Song Sung Blue... for some reason that night there were gigantic tins of caramel corn in our dressing rooms and one of those tins looked pretty funny adorning the coffee table in front of Sean and “Neil” as they entertained us from a big leather couch surrounded by red curtains. I was about to clamour for Jerusalem or Love On The Rocks when we were summoned for the drive to St. Louis.
This evening in Milwaukee I wrote a new song and photographed a great fireworks display from my 19th floor hotel room. Not a bad night.
Six more days and I’ll get to see my husband, who is meeting me in Calgary and will stay with me until the end of this leg in Vancouver on September 10 to take me home for a few weeks. Sweet...

What, like this? stevenma@pressenter.com - Steve Manfred, River Falls, WI ... about to leave for Milwaukee
Comments confuse me. Soon after I was patting myself on the back for figuring out how to post a comment, I realized I don't actually know if it worked because I can't see it. I can see my name up there, and some # symbols in a vertical line. They are clickable, but evidently not so much for me because when I click on them -- NOTHING. It's like the universe is laughing at me. That or telling me to actually do some work one of these hours.
Anyway, enough whining. Yes, if you have a moment, I'd love to hear back from you, and thank you for offering. My email address is jennifer_davidow@yahoo.com. In case my other comments are as elusive to you as to me, I said basically (1) love the blog; (2) love your voice and album and looking forward to the next one; (3) love the tour.
Have a great show tonight!

Hi Kathryn,
I just wanted to say love your blog,I look forward to reading it each week. Have to say also your cd is great and thanks for putting out such great talent. I was able to see the show in SLC UT on July 19th and have had the post concert blues ever since. YOu guys did such an amazing job and it is the best concert I have ever been too. I hope to catch the show again on your second leg hopefully if you come back to the U.S. I would love to hear back from you when you get a chance at abbeydaw@yahoo.com Question? What city has been your favorite so far? Crowd? You rock and your voice is beatiful, you and sarah compliment eachother well. Sarah rocks too! Talk to you soon, have a good rest the tour! YOu will love Edinburgh Scotland I lived there for a year it beautiful~ anyways,See ya!
I Love "My Little Flame"! I went to the "Afterglow" concert in St.Louis; and bought the cd after the show. "Shrinking Violet" is my absolute favorite. Did you find anything interesting to do when you were here? In the last blog you talk about the Neil Diamond tribute band. Have you seen the movie "Saving Silverman"? With
Jack Black and that guy from "American Pie". In that movie those guys are in a Neil Diamond tribute band as well. It's pretty funny. Well I just wanted to thank you for this fantastic cd. I love how unique your songs
are. Very gourmet

Hi Kathryn:
I've been reading your "blog" for a little while now, and have enjoyed your stories of life behind the scenes so to speak. I purchased your CD in Toronto (what a fabulous show), and I just am truly amazed by your talent and your voice. "I Married Myself" is by far my favourite song!
I also wanted to ask you opinion, because you seem to be very aware of various social issues, etc., I am looking to start a research project examining the media's perspectives of women's reproductive health issues (I am a Ph.D. student, finishing up my dissertation on women who have been diagnosed with endometriosis). The next step in my project is to interview those in the media/and or those that could have an influence on women's health in the media. I would be very interested in your opinions and knowledge of women's health.
Warm regards,
Emily Freeman

Hi Kathryn
I really enjoy reading your blog, it's so funny (if some people don't have a good sense of humour, it shouldn't be your problem). I was at the concert in Montréal, it was an amazing show, I'll never forget it. When your new album is released, come visit us! If you have tour blues sometimes come on my website to chat (www.sarahmclachlan.info), you can stay anonymous if you don't want to be bothered by stupid questions. Enjoy the rest of the tour! HI Kathryn, I just wanted to say that I loved the show in Detroit, and I think you're a great complement to Sarah on stage.
I find your blog very entertaining and I look forward to new entries, keep up the good work and have fun!
Thanks!

I saw you while you were in Houston, Texas. I THINK in your tour diary you only saw the insides of the arenas here and in Austin. Which was a shame because Austin is GORGEOUS! Houston is nice....but its a typical big city. Anyway - it was an awesome concert and a fabulous evening!!! First night out w/o my little boy and I was really missing him!! But then just relaxed, sat back, and enjoyed the music. You should have had a solo or two. I mean - Butterfly sure pushed her music - you should have gotten equal time. :o) Thanks, Syndee (scjc04@yahoo.com)
Glad to hear you enjoyed Chicago!
I've been reading your blog for some time now, and I must say, I really appreciate your writing and the sense of humor you have. Plus you've got a stellar voice and the most wicked facial expressions ever!

Hey! You are Amazing! I loved Camille Henderson and you a great addition to the group! I saw you live in Cincinnati. I was front row center and while I know you probably don't remember, Sarah looked, waved, and even blew a kiss right at me... looked me in the eye and everything and I was wondering if sarah ever mentions or talks about the individual tours, or even crowds good or bad. I LOVED YOUR SHOW! You all are extremely talented and I appreciate it a lot!

I've got to say you guys were really hat in Milwaukee last night. Really, really hat. :)

Hey Kathryn
Your blog is the best and love reading about the tour. I saw you in Columbus, OH a week ago and was so impressed with your voice. You and Sarah sound great together. Will you guys be doing a second leg in 2005? My email address is b.terrigno@comcast.net
Congrats on the tour & keep up the amazing work!
Barra(which rhymes with Sarah and yes thats my real name) :)
Hi Kathryn
I have really enjoyed reading on your thoughts during your tour. I was lucky enough to see the show three times, the last one in Adelaide, Australia (if you remember my girlfriend and I caught up with you in the lounge of your hotel after the show). You have added something very unique to Sarah's band, and are obviously having a great time on tour. I was angry with myself for not mentioning how intriguing your blog was when we spoke in Adelaide, so hopefully you get this message ...

Thoughts on the Milwaukee and St. Paul shows:
- you guys sounded just as great and tight as you did in Milwaukee... and somehow "Answer" was even more impressive hearing it the second time. Yours and the others harmony parts really give that one some extra punch.
- I've long heard that Packers fans are more demonstrative than Vikings fans (who prefer to politely remain in their seats so they don't block the view of the people behind them), but I didn't realize the effect would carry over to a Sarah McLachlan audience too. The Milwaukee crowd, though a little smaller, was more fun.
- On the other hand, to St. Paul's credit, they must have beaten Butterfly's CD sales record because the entire building was sold out of her CD at the end when my cousin tried to buy it. I was smart and bought a copy of both it and your CD before the show started. Haven't had the chance to listen to either yet but will do very soon... maybe during laundry today. :) (I wonder if the sound problems she had just whetted everyone's appetite more... their invoking of the "you've gotta beat Green Bay/Milwaukee" rivalry couldn't have hurt either. :) )
- wow, the crew really do do a different gag every night at their intro... and they're good gags too. Who writes their material?
- I like your glitter-kiss move on your intro. Very cute. It's about the only chance you get in your role to distinguish yourself a bit, and you've found a good way to do so I think.
- Thanks for the nod at the end last night. (That was aimed right at me, right? Seemed like it.) Sean seemed to recognize me (or my hat anyway) too earlier on. It's been all hats, lately, hasn't it?
- These shows were so good I had half a mind to chase you all the way to Winnipeg and see tonight's show too... I couldn't get a fan club seat there at this point though so it wouldn't be the same. :)
- Hope to see you all next year. Take care and be well.
With a hat tipped in farewell, Steve Manfred, River Falls, WI, stevenma@pressenter.com
Would love to hear from you if the blog ceases to be upon the close of Sarah's tour. Tim (diphthong02@comcast.net)
hi Kathryn,
Let me be the 476th to join in and say "thank you" for keeping the blog during the tour. I've really enjoyed the behind the scenes stories and anecdotes, and I am hoping that your European entries will be just as fun to read and sort of make me feel like I'm along for the puddle-jump:) I've hit 4 shows so far (don't know if you caught it, but I was the one with the sign at the end of "Possession" in Milwaukee:)) and hope to catch you again next year. In the meantime, enjoy some well-deserved rest/downtime with your new groom. Take care and safe travels.
Sincerely,
Amy Briggs amy122@earthlink.net

ps-I didn't realize you were in Esthero-great band!

You're a welcome addition to the Sarah crew...
I am looking forward to hearing you once again in Vancouver tomorrow night :)

Kathryn,
I hope you are enjoying your time off and your family...
Thanks for some great laughs and insight into your adventures this summer!! I caught the show in Las Vegas...what a stellar performance by all!( Sorry I missed you on the casino floor, I am a big slots fan !!) ...I also caught the show in Atlanta with my 16 yr old who had a very large time...thanks! It was well worth the 9 hour drive... we did lots of "bonding" and catching up!
Your insight into life on the road is a gas and brings back so many memories (LOL).... (I toured with a few no name/big hair bands as a Lighting Design technician in the mid 80's. The lead singer was also female and we were the only girls on the tour!) so I have been re-living (vicariously...) life on the road through your posts... and I'm sure therapy is indicated!!
(I'll be receiving both electro-shock and intensive group therapy...we are hoping for a breakthrough in early 2005!!)
But seriously...take care and enjoy your time away!...I know everyone must be exhausted!! A month is such a short time to re-charge your batteries...
We will see you in London at Royal Albert Hall on the 21st of October...
My son and I are taking a holiday in the U.K. that week....(no stalker jokes please...!)
That is provided hurricane Ivan doesn't finish removing Central Florida from the map ?!!?
Take care and blessings to you and yours!

Kathryn,
I saw you in Cincinnati with Sarah McLachlan and it was such a fabulous show. I just want to say in regards to your not finding the revolving restaurant in Cincinnati that you probably didn't find it because it is not actually in Cincinnati. It's in Covington, KY right across the bridge. It's atop of the Radisson Hotel (I think that's the name of the hotel, I can't remember) off of interstate 75 south-covington/Ludlow exit. Perhaps next time you will be able to find it. I hope the tour was successful.
